Clothing

Clothing in dreams is a means by which your feelings of status are expressed in dreams. Do you measure up to others or are you "over-dressed"? Did you forget your shoes? Is your shirt on backwards? Are your pants stained? Are you under dressed? Dreams of being inappropriately attired reflect feelings of unpreparedness in waking life. Clothing worn backwards suggests role-reversal. A torn or soiled wedding dress is common symbol of hopes for a marriage that have "worn ragged" or "been spoiled" by disappointment. Those in formal attire represent people you feel are of high status in waking life. Conversely, those who are disheveled represent the opposite. How the clothes make you feel IN the dream reflect your feelings about yourself and your status.

The size of clothing is meaningful. If the clothes are too big in a dream, it reflects feelings that you may have taken on too much in waking life or cannot "fill the shoes." If clothes are too small, it reflects feelings that the role you are playing in waking life "no longer fits." New clothes indicate a change in social status.

Shoes in dreams are symbols of the "direction we are headed" in our lives. New shoes indicate a new status; we are headed in a new direction. Worn shoes reflect feelings that one has expended a great deal of time and effort on an endeavor, and may reflect feelings of exhaustion or depression. To be barefoot in a dream reflects feelings of vulnerability about a new role in your life, perhaps as a result of a divorce or layoff. Wearing two different shoes indicates being pulled in two directions. High heels are associated with sexuality.

Dreams of wearing underwear or being partially clothed in a dream suggest feelings of emotional vulnerability. Partial attire in an office or business context reflects feelings of unpreparedness, or scrutiny by one's boss or co-workers. Being partially clothed in the company of a crush or potential lover suggests your attraction is "readily visible." If no one notices your state of undress, the dream indicates you may be feeling over-sensitive. No one else can see your exposed feelings!
